Lessons for HR Managers of the Future

Becoming a leader is not something you can learn as a classroom course, but are instincts and skills you horn on over time and through life experiences. For HR managers 2016 is the year to work on their personal skill sets make use of their knowledge and understanding of their organization and top management to make insightful decisions based on understanding global business patterns, and able to storm through pressure-cooker moments at work with ease.

Striving to reach the top management HR managers need to adapt to following the 10 rules by the book like drinking water every day:

Connect with Like-minded people

Connecting with your team members is not only important for your professional growth but also personal. Find out about their strengths and weakness, in that process you might find a hidden talent within yourself. This will give you as a manager to distinguish the best minds from the good, and start building your team. Delegate your work and goals according to your teams’ strengths, and then distribute the rewards fairly among your team.

Do not lose focus from long-term goals

Achieving short-term goals eventually leads to the end result, but not letting you get muddled in resolving short term crises is what a great leader should focus towards. At times, it may require you to create a new process and abandon the old tedious process to get to the bigger goal.

Be the mentor people respect

The old saying of “Respect is earned” plays a pivotal role in being the leader that you yearn for, and not fall pray of being the most popular manager. Be mindful of your actions and careful about who is watching you.

Accept the Teaching and Learning Hat for Life

As a manager your team will never stop looking up to you to come up with something innovative and new. Therefore, you hold the seniority position. Accept that you will learn from your team and they will look up to you as their mentor/ teacher throughout.

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” William Arthur Ward

Success is achieved through teamwork

Throw away the feelings of being threatened and replaced by your team members. Actively reward and listen to your colleagues to earn the respect you deserve as a leader.

“The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things.” Ronald Reagan

Be Accountable

With accountability comes responsibility; and leading by example. As an HR manager you have a responsibility to be accounted for you and your teams’ actions and practices, rather than blame it on circumstances. When you hold the accountability flag, your team will not only look up to you, but also work harder to achieve their goals.

Communication is a parallel road

Set the precedence of an open communication and transfer of information among team members, informing them of their expectations and listening to them as to what they expect off you as a manager. Keeping a balanced open door policy allows your team to be honest and open with you. Let your team voice out their opinion and try to accommodate their thoughts and ideas.

“The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them.” – General Colin Powell

Be quick to take action

As a leader it is absolutely essential for you to be on the go, alert and quick at taking decisions as and when needed. Also, arm your team with the information to make the right decisions. Share your successes.

Nothing wrong in asking questions

There was never anything wrong in asking questions, for it only becomes another mode of learning, and the thirst to learn more. Be wise by learning from others experiences and wisdom as well.

Enjoy what you do

Be passionate about what you do. “If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking, don’t settle” Steve Jobs

A great leader’s success is not sown with a title, but how they are able to harness the strengths of their colleagues and bring out leaders in them enjoying their team’s successes as their success
